Rory Miller is a seasoned writer and educator residing peacefully in the Pacific Northwest, USA. His background includes seventeen years of service in corrections as an officer and sergeant—handling maximum security units, bookings, and mental health issues; leading tactical teams; and instructing topics ranging from Defensive Tactics and Use of Force to First Aid and Crisis Communications with the Mentally Ill. He also served as an advisor to the Iraqi Corrections System for fourteen months. His academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, experience as a Combat Medic (91A/B) in the National Guard, and black belts in judo and fencing, along with a mokuroku in jujutsu.
Mr. Miller is author of numerous award-winning books and DVDs, including "Meditations on Violence," "Facing Violence," "Scaling Force," and "Conflict Communications." His martial arts experience combined with his correctional background enables him to distill lessons learned from various confrontations—ranging from jailhouse brawls to tactical operations—highlighting the distinctions between martial arts training and real-world violence.
In his work, Miller challenges prevalent myths and metaphors within martial arts communities by contrasting idealized notions with the complex realities of violence experienced outside dojo settings.
